Sen. Hensley reappointed vice-chairman of Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee
January 14, 2019 --- State Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) has been reappointed to the leadership of the Senate’s most powerful committee, the Finance, Ways and Means Committee. The announcement was made by Lt. Governor Randy McNally as the General Assembly wrapped up organizational duties for the 2021-2022 sessions.
The committee has the responsibility of considering all measures dealing with the appropriation of state funds and has oversight regarding legislation pertaining to bonds, pensions, investments or indebtedness. The membership is generally made up of the Senate’s top leadership or other members with seniority or expertise in finance.
“I appreciate the confidence of Lt. Gov. McNally to continue to serve in this leadership role in our Finance Committee,” said Sen. Hensley. “Tennessee is recognized as being one of the best financially managed states in the nation. I look forward to working with my colleagues on a responsible budget that continues that status, while providing needed services to Tennesseans and bolstering our state’s COVID-19 recovery efforts.”
Hensley will also serve as a member of the Senate Education Committee which reviews all legislation and budgets regarding K-12 schools and higher education. The committee will be the focal point of 2021 action in the General Assembly with Governor Lee calling a special session on education on January 19.
“Education has always been a top priority of mine,” added Hensley. “We have a lot of work ahead of us in the special session to help students, parents and teachers with the resources they need to not only recover learning losses that occurred as a result of COVID-19, but to boost student outcomes over the long term.”
In addition, Hensley was appointed to the Health and Welfare Committee. This committee is responsible for legislation dealing with all aspects of public welfare, hospitals, nursing homes, various health care professions, and services for mental health, the developmentally disabled, and the aged.
Senator Hensley represents Giles, Lawrence, Lewis, Maury, Perry and Wayne Counties in District 28 in the Tennessee Senate. He can be reached through email at sen.joey.hensley@capitol.tn.gov, by mail at 425 5th Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243 or by phone at (615) 741-3100
